Liquid storage tanks are important structures for storing liquids. The behavior of Liquid storage tanks in seismic zones depends on the type of the structure, its shape, the way it is supported and other many other parameters. The main purpose of this course is to introduce the most common types of Liquid storage tanks and to identify the main parameters that play an important role in their dynamic behavior during an earthquake.

  • Understand the dynamic behavior of liquid storage tanks when subjected to earthquake ground motion

  • Identify the important parameters that have an effect on the seismic behavior of liquid storage tanks

  • understand how to evaluate the response of a tank structure using simplified modeling techniques

One day

  • Basic concepts on seismic waves;

  • Fault geometry, seismic waves, earthquake properties and seismic hazard;

Dynamic behavior of liquid storage tanks

  • Identification of parameters for dynamic analysis

  • Models for dynamic analysis

  • Convective masses and impulsive masses

  • Liquid storage tanks on ground

  • Elevated liquid storage tanks (example : water tower)

  • Application of response spectrum technique

  • Application of the eigenvalue analysis for evaluating the periods and mode shapes of the structure

  • Bending moments, shear forces, axial forces and stresses at the tank shell

  • Examples of liquid storage tanks damaged by earthquakes

  • Description of the various foundation components

  • Geotechnical parameters to be taken into account

Who Should Attend:

Civil engineers and structural engineers, professionals involved in the design and construction of tanks, students and researchers. Participants should have basic knowledge about structures.
